BeBop Sensors Announces Automotive Seat Sensor System
BeBop Sensors to Improve Automotive Safety
Intelligent Fabric Sensors in Seats Enable Smarter
Occupant Classification System (OCS)
Berkeley, CA, May 9, 2016 — BeBop Sensors http://www.bebopsensors.com,
the leader in smart fabric sensor technology, today announced an automotive seat sensor system designed to improve occupant sensing, classification, and safety.
Current OCS Systems: Automotive Occupant Classification Systems (OCS) estimate the weight of a passenger in order to deploy airbags or disable airbags if a child or infant car seat is placed on the front passenger seat. Most OCS systems rely on a combination of bladders, hoses, and pressure sensors to estimate the weight on the seat. Armed with only weight information, very little intelligence is used to determine airbag deployment.
Due to increasing failure rates in current OCS systems and the resulting recalls, automobile manufacturers are looking for more intelligent and dependable OCS solutions.
The BeBop Advantage: BeBop’s smart fabric OCS takes continuous full seat pressure images, providing real time data frames containing pressure information from the entire seat used to measure all aspects of physical contact between the occupant and the seat. Computer vision understands occupant position and all movements including leaning forward, left, or right, crossing legs, and detecting the rigid bottom of a child booster seat – in addition to determining size and weight. See Video Demo Here.
BeBop’s high-resolution sensing system provides the granular detail required for next generation classification systems, which will need to distinguish subtle details and changes to an occupant’s position and movements in real time. A bag of groceries and a small child look the same to any weight based system.
BeBop’s flexible, waterproof OCS sensor system, at 1 mm, is thin enough to be placed under the seat cover. The fabric-based sensors are substantially lighter than any other liquid-based OCS solutions, ensuring minimal weight is added to the seat construction.
BeBop’s OCS sensors have no moving parts, further increasing reliability. The sensors are automotive grade (environmental specs and durability) and can be custom designed for any seat in the front row or back row.
BeBop Sensors works with OEMs in the automotive industry to develop and deploy custom fabric sensors for OCS/safety applications, autonomous vehicles, comfort enhancement and soft-switch control interfaces. Other BeBop markets include IoT and consumer health.
